Unlocking the biochemical potential of high yielding buckwheat genotypes
Abstract
Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) is a short duration multipurpose crop and mainly an underutilized medicinal crop. People are unaware about its medicinal properties like strengthening the blood veins and to reduce the harmful effects of X-rays during treatments due to its biochemical composition. In this regard the present experiment was conducted to estimate the flavonoids and other mineral compounds present in high yielding buckwheat genotypes. The genotype EC-386668 has resulted in the highest rutin (1353.17 mg/100g), quercetin (7.52 mg/100g), fagopyrin (4.67 mg/100g) and protein (13.81%) contents. Among the micronutrients estimated, iron (0.51 mg/100g) and manganese (0.18 mg/100g) were found higher in the same genotype. Thus, the genotype EC-386668 can be considered as a potential buckwheat genotype among other high yielding types.
