Clinical investigation and therapeutic management of dystocia in rabbit doe
Abstract
Dystocia in rabbits is rare, it is a crucial surgical emergency often linked to anatomical and physiological limitations. This report outlines the case of a 2-year-old, 3 kg female rabbit who was clinically managed for dystocia due to secondary uterine inertia with persistent straining and vulvar discharge after partial fetal expulsion. Radiologic evaluation revealed a fetal skeleton in the pelvic cavity. Ultrasonography examination confirmed foetal demise, evidenced by the absence of cardiac activity. Management consisted of intramuscular oxytocin (0.2 mL), 5% DNS infusion (60 mL), 10% calcium gluconate (1.5 mL), and multivitamins (1 mL) through the marginal ear vein. Post-treatment, one deceased fetus was expelled. A course of antibiotics and multivitamins was prescribed for post-partum care. The doe had an uncomplicated recovery.
