Exploring functional food ingredients for enhancing human health and disease prevention
Abstract
Functional food ingredients have gained considerable attention due to their potential role in promoting human health and preventing chronic diseases beyond basic nutrition. These bioactive components, including probiotics, prebiotics, dietary fibers, polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, bioactive peptides, and phytochemicals, exert physiological benefits by modulating metabolic pathways, immune responses, and gut microbiota composition. This review explores major classes of functional food ingredients, their mechanisms of action, and their documented health benefits, including the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and gastrointestinal disorders. Emerging trends, technological challenges, and future research directions related to functional food development are also discussed. The integration of functional ingredients into daily diets represents a promising strategy for improving public health and reducing the global burden of non-communicable diseases.
