Impact of seed priming and sowing windows on biochemical attributes of summer soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) during storage

Abstract

The present study entitled, “Impact of seed priming and sowing windows on biochemical attributes of summer soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) during storage” was carried out under the field and laboratory conditions at Post Graduate Institute Research Farm and Seed Technology Research Unit, Department of Agricultural Botany, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Dist. Ahilyanagar (M.S.) during summer season 2023 and 2024 with the objectives to study the effect of seed priming and sowing dates on growth and yield of summer soybean. Further, to study the effect of seed priming and sowing dates on seed quality and biochemical parameters of summer soybean during storage. Soybean seed sown on three sowing dates i.e. 1st January (1st week of January) (S1), 20th January (3rd week of January) (S2) and 10th February (2nd week of February) (S3). Three varieties of soybean viz., Phule Sangam (KDS-726) (V1), Phule Kimaya (KDS-753) (V2) and Phule Durva (KDS-992) (V3) were primed with seed priming treatments viz., Control (T1), Salicylic acid-100 ppm (T2), IAA -100 ppm (T3), ABA- 100 ppm (T4), GA3-100 ppm (T5) and α-tocopherol- 100 ppm (T6). Whereas, seeds were stored until germination percentage declined below 70.00% (as per Indian Minimum Seed Certification Standards, 2013). The field experiment was conducted in Factorial Split Plot Design (Factorial SPD) with three replications whereas, in laboratory Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD) was used. In the laboratory experiment, Activities of antioxidative enzymes viz., catalase and lipid peroxidase activity were investigated at initial, 4th month and 8th month of storage. Seed sown on 1st January (1st week of January) (S1), Phule Durva (KDS-992) (V3) and seed primed with α- tocopherol (100 ppm) (T6) significantly increased activity of antioxidative enzymes viz. catalase, whereas it delayed the rate of lipid peroxidation as compared to other sowing dates, varieties and priming treatments up to 240 days of storage. Among the different interactions, interaction i.e., 1st January (1st week of January) (S1) with α- tocopherol (100 ppm) (T6) (S1T6), Phule Durva (KDS-992) (V3) with α- tocopherol (100 ppm) (T6) (V3T6) and 1st January (1st week of January) (S1) with Phule Durva (KDS-992) (V3) (S1V3) increased activity of antioxidative enzymes viz. catalase, whereas it delayed the rate of lipid peroxidation. Result of experiment showed that among the different interactions, interaction i.e., 1st January (1st week of January) (S1), Phule Durva (KDS-992) (V3) and α- tocopherol (100 ppm) (T6) (S1V3T6) showed higher catalase activity and lower lipid peroxidase activity.
