Agroecology and Pest Management: Balancing Environmental Sustainability, Human Health, and the Role of Silkworms in Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract

This paper examines the role of agroecology in fostering sustainable agricultural practices that prioritize environmental health, human well-being, and economic viability. Specifically, it highlights the use of silkworms (Bombyx mori) in pest management and as bioindicators within agroecological systems. The study discusses the integration of ecological principles in pest control strategies, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and biological controls, to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. These agroecological approaches are shown to enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and mitigate the negative impacts of traditional farming practices. The paper underscores the need for global adoption of agroecological practices to address the growing challenges of food security, environmental degradation, and public health risks. It also emphasizes the importance of promoting silkworms as indicators of agroecosystem health, contributing to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.
