Preliminary phytochemical characterization, anti-inflammatory potential of solvent extracted Lantana camara leaf oil

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to screen the Lantana camara leaf oil for its phytochemicals and anti-inflammatory activity. Phytochemical screening was found that methanol extract have alkaloids, flavonoids and phenols, steroids and sterols, and tannins, while chloroform extract possessed alkaloids, flavonoids and phenols, steroids and sterols, and tannins. Carbohydrate, flavonoids, glycosides, protein and amino acids and saponins were absent in both extracts. Overall, conclusion was that methanol extract possessed higher antioxidant activity with IC50 value of < 300 µg/ml among both extracts and higher inhibition found in DPPH method 89.26±1.21% and in ABTS method 92.21±1.29%. All extracts showed% of inhibition in increasing order. Methanol extract of L. camara leaves was exhibited excellent anti-inflammatory activity against COX-1 & COX-2 with IC50 value less than < 0.2mg/ml. Chloroform extract of L. camara leaves possessed moderate activity (< 0.3 mg/ml) against both COX-1 & COX-2.
