Development of herbal face scrub enriched with turmeric and sandalwood for skin rejuvenation

Abstract

Synthetic cosmetic products, though widely used, often pose risks of adverse effects including skin irritation and long-term dermal damage. Herbal-based phytocosmetic formulations offer a safer, natural alternative for effective skin care. Curcuma longa (turmeric) and Santalum album (sandalwood) are traditionally valued for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-nourishing properties. The study aimed to formulate and evaluate a herbal face scrub incorporating ethanolic extracts of Curcuma longa and Santalum album, and to assess its physicochemical, organoleptic, and performance characteristics. The herbal extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extraction using ethanol and incorporated into a face scrub formulation via cold blending. The scrub was evaluated for organoleptic properties, pH, spreadability, grittiness, washability, homogeneity, extrudability, viscosity, and foamability using standard protocols. The face scrub demonstrated an appealing color, pleasant odor, smooth consistency, and fine exfoliating particles. The pH and viscosity were within optimal ranges for topical use. Spreadability, foamability, and extrudability were satisfactory, confirming excellent handling and application properties. The herbal face scrub containing Curcuma longa and Santalum album exhibited favorable cosmetic and functional attributes, supporting its potential as a safe, natural, and effective phytocosmetic product for skin care. Further antimicrobial and clinical studies are recommended.
