Pharmacognostical and Preliminary Phytochemical studies of Camellia sinensis (L.) extracts and Azadirachta indica oil

Abstract

Herbal medicines have existed world-wide with long recorded history and they were used in ancient Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Indian medicine for various therapies purposes. Current study is pharmacognostical and preliminary phytochemical studies of Camellia sinensis (L.) and Azadirachta indica oil. According to WHO guidelines 2011, Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical standardization of herbal/plant materials were observed by organoleptic characteristics, Microscopic Characteristics and other physicochemical evaluation etc. Preliminary Phytochemical Studies of Camellia sinensis (L.) leaves results showed that the methanol extract have presence of alkaloids, saponins, phenolic and tannins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids etc. The yield of the dried leaves methanol extract was found to 10.5% and Azadirachta indica fruits oil was found 2.5%. The oil was further used for some physicochemical characterization i.e., color, codor, taste, appearance, refractive index and optical rotation.
