The role of the Indian knowledge system on women’s empowerment in India: A study

Abstract

The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) has played a multifaceted role in influencing women's empowerment in India. This study explored the historical perspectives, indigenous practices, and contemporary challenges associated with women's empowerment within the IKS framework. The research methodology is primarily descriptive, utilizing secondary sources, such as historical texts, academic articles, and government documents. These findings indicate that while certain elements of IKS have historically supported gender equality, others have reinforced patriarchal norms. Nonetheless, the reinterpretation and integration of traditional knowledge with modern strategies offer opportunities for advancing women's empowerment. Indigenous practices such as self-help groups and microfinance have proven effective in enhancing women's financial independence and social status, particularly in rural areas. Women entrepreneurs capitalize on traditional knowledge in sectors such as herbal products, arts, and crafts, although they continue to encounter societal and institutional barriers. The intersection of gender with other identities, such as caste and class, creates complex challenges that necessitate nuanced empowerment strategies. Challenges persist in preserving and commercializing traditional knowledge, including inadequate documentation, weak legal protection, and difficulties in integrating indigenous knowledge into global policies. The study concludes that future efforts to empower women in India should focus on developing culturally sensitive policies, strengthening legal protections for indigenous knowledge, expanding support for women entrepreneurs, addressing intersectional challenges, and promoting gender-sensitive approaches to education, healthcare, and economic development.
