Zika virus management: Integrating traditional vector control methods with emerging antiviral therapies and genomic technologies
Abstract
Zika virus, arnmosquito-borne flavivirus, poses ongoing public health concerns, particularlyrnin tropical and subtropical regions. Traditional vector control methodssuch as insecticide use, rnenvironmental management, and community educationare essential forrnlimiting Aedes mosquito populations. However, recent advances inrnantiviral therapies and genomic technologies offer powerful complementaryrnstrategies. Small-molecule inhibitors, RNA-based therapeutics, and monoclonalrnantibodies are being developed to block viral replication and entry.rnSimultaneously, tools like CRISPR-based gene drives and next-generationrnsequencing are revolutionizing vector control and enhancing real-time outbreakrnsurveillance. This integrated approach combines conventional public healthrnpractices with cutting-edge biotechnology to build a multi-tiered defense againstrnZika virus transmission and resurgence. It enables early detection, targetedrninterventions, and long-term preparedness. Ethical implementation, sustainedrnresearch investment, and international collaboration remain crucial for therndurability of this hybrid framework. This review highlights the convergence ofrntraditional and innovative methods as a roadmap for adaptive, resilient Zikarnvirus control.
