Review on application of silkworm pupae in human and animal nutrition

Abstract

With the growing need for sustainable and nutritious protein sources, edible insects like silkworm pupae are gaining attention. A by-product of the sericulture industry, silkworm pupae contain high protein content, essential fatty acids, and diverse bioactive compounds. In addition to their well-known nutritional benefits, silkworm pupae are now being extensively studied for their potential medical applications in humans and animals. This review explores the antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, and potential function as food or feed ingredient. It also highlights modern processing techniques in product development, alongside safety considerations including allergenicity, microbiological risks, and global food regulations. By reviewing the existing body of research, this work aims to promote the wider adoption of silkworm pupae for its rich source of valuable biological compounds in both human food and animal feed systems.
