Bridging generational knowledge gaps: Transmitting traditional food wisdom to younger generation

Abstract

India is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by urbanization, economic growth, various technological advancements and globalization which have significantly reshaped lifestyle and dietary patterns of the younger generation which has led to a decline in the intergenerational transmission of indigenous food knowledge within the families. This review paper explores various challenges and strategies involved in transmission of traditional food wisdom to the younger generations. Results indicate that socio-cultural shifts, change in dietary patterns, technological advancements followed by media, pose a major challenge in the transmission of indigenous food knowledge. To address these, strategies such as cultural revitalization programs, promoting food wisdom through media, mentorship & apprenticeship, community-based agricultural practices and the policy integration can be effective. Reviving the traditional food practices strengthens the cultural heritage, promotes health and well-being, furthermore, contributes to the environmental sustainability, and fosters youth empowerment. Additionally, sharing knowledge bridges generational gaps and strengthens bond among family and the community. Integrating the traditional food education through modern platforms and within institutional frameworks can help younger generations to reconnect with the indigenous practices, ensuring food system sustainability and healthier communities.
