Chemical composition of the essential oil of Ocimum sanctum L. growing in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India

Abstract

The objective of the current study was to assess the essential oil content and chemical composition of Ocimum sanctum L., growing in the Uttarakhand, India. The hydro-distilled essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The essential oil content was found to be 1.2% (v/w). Results demonstrated that the oil was found to be rich in phenyl derivative compounds (62.68%) The major compound was identified as Eugenol (59.95%), among twenty-seven compounds, comprising 94.32% of the total oil.
