The role of diet in stress management: Applications of therapeutic nutrition

Abstract

Stress is a pervasive health concern with profound physiological and psychological consequences. Emerging research highlights the critical role of diet in modulating stress responses and promoting mental well-being. Nutritional interventions incorporating essential micronutrients, adaptogens, and dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean and anti-inflammatory diets have demonstrated significant potential in stress management. This review explores the mechanisms by which therapeutic nutrition influences stress physiology, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, gut-brain axis, and neurotransmitter modulation. Additionally, specific dietary components, including omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, polyphenols, and amino acids, are discussed in the context of their stress-relieving properties. This paper aims to provide an evidence-based understanding of dietary strategies that can be integrated into therapeutic interventions for stress management.
