The role of educational games in developing cognitive, social, and creative skills in gifted STEAM education
Abstract
This study explores the role of educational games in developing cognitive, social, and creative skills within the context of gifted STEAM education. Utilizing a qualitative methodological approach, the research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with six teachers who participated in a professional development program on gifted STEAM education. The findings indicate that educational games offer significant potential for enhancing higher-order thinking, creativity, collaboration, and emotional resilience. Teachers emphasized that games provide a dynamic and engaging learning environment, allowing gifted students to apply theoretical knowledge through practical problem-solving, strategic planning, and creative exploration. Additionally, the collaborative nature of educational games fosters social interaction and communication skills, promoting inclusivity within mixed-ability classrooms. However, challenges related to differentiation, inclusivity, and assessment were also identified, particularly in designing games that are simultaneously challenging for gifted students and accessible for non-gifted peers. The study concludes that educational games, when thoughtfully integrated into the gifted STEAM framework, can serve as powerful tools for promoting cognitive, social, and creative growth.
