Unlocking Flaxseed’s potential: Phytochemical profiling and HPLC-based standardization

Abstract

Objective: To perform the physicochemical and phytochemical analysis, along with High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprinting, of Linum usitatissimum seeds to establish the standard pharmacognostical parameters. Methods: Many standardization parameters, such as extractive values, total ash, water-soluble ash, acid-insoluble ash, moisture content, loss on drying, and pH, were evaluated for Linum usitatissimum seeds. Phytochemical screening was conducted to detect the presence of alkaloids, phenols, glycosides, tannins, and other compounds. High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) was employed to create a fingerprint profile of the methanolic extract of Linum usitatissimum seeds. Result: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of carbohydrates, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes, sterols, and tannins across different solvent extracts. The HPLC screening were found total 28 peaks, 3rd is the highest peak of Area % 20.256% at 2.859 minutes retention time. Conclusion: The findings of this study could be useful to the herbal industry for the identification, purification, and standardization of Linum usitatissimum seeds.
