Physicochemical and phytochemical characterization of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. along with its HPLC profiling

Abstract

Introduction: Aftimoon (Cuscuta reflexa Roxb.) is a widely recognized medicinal plant with a rich history in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine. It is known for its diverse therapeutic properties, including neuroprotection, anti-tumor activity, anti-inflammatory effects, antimicrobial action, antioxidant potential, hepatoprotective benefits, and cardioprotective properties. Additionally, it plays a role inCuscuta reflexa Roxb., encompassing the whole plant and its standardization. Methods: To standardize the test drug, various analytical techniques were employed, including organoleptic evaluation, extractive value determination, ash content analysis, phytochemical screening, elemental analysis, fluorescence study, and HPLC profiling. Results: The findings revealed that the total ash content was 7.72%, while the water-soluble and alcohol-soluble extractive values were 12.3% and 8.4%, respectively. The moisture content was recorded at 11.12%, foreign matter was 0.60% and the swelling index was less than 100. The HPLC analysis displayed 12 peaks, with peak 01 and peak 08 being the most significant, showing area concentrations and retention times of 25.974% at 2.8 minutes and 29.967% at 4.399 minutes, respectively. Conclusion: This study provides essential reference data for ensuring the quality, purity, and identification of future batches of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb., contributing to its standardization in medicinal applications.
