Value addition in mulberry byproducts: Opportunities and prospects

Abstract

Mulberry (Morus spp.), primarily cultivated for silkworm feed, produces various byproducts such as leaves, stems, bark, and fruits, which often go underutilized. These byproducts, however, hold significant potential for value addition, which can contribute to both economic growth and environmental sustainability. This article explores the various opportunities and prospects for utilizing mulberry byproducts in different industries. Mulberry leaves can be used for animal feed, functional foods, nutraceuticals, and biofuel production. The fruits, rich in antioxidants, are valuable in beverages, pharmaceuticals, and natural remedies. Mulberry stems and bark offer applications in paper production, textiles, and environmental management. Additionally, mulberry waste can be transformed into compost, biodegradable packaging, and organic fertilizers. The article highlights recent technological advances that enhance the value-added utilization of mulberry byproducts, including biotechnology and nanotechnology. The diverse applications of mulberry byproducts provide a promising path toward sustainable agricultural practices and green innovation.
