IPv6 Implementation in brazil: barriers, strategies, and performance insights from regional isps

Abstract

The transition to the IPv6 protocol is an inevitable challenge for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), given the exponential growth of connected devices and the exhaustion of IPv4. In Brazil, the adoption rate stands at 50.15%, the second-highest rate in South America. Despite the RIRs having distributed IPv6 blocks to ISPs, various technical and financial issues present barriers to the protocol's adoption by users. This article addresses the challenges faced by ISPs operating in a region of the Brazilian interior. Data was collected from 10 ISPs serving the area, followed by an interview with the technical team of one provider (Provider A). Subsequently, performance metrics such as transfer rate, latency, and packet loss were analyzed. Upon implementing IPv6 in its infrastructure, emerging issues point to equipment upgrades, system adjustments for network devices, and a high demand for configuration on client equipment.
