Recent advances and applications of IoT in post-harvest supply chain management: A detailed review

Abstract

The post-harvest food supply chain faces numerous challenges in ensuring the delivery of fresh and safe products to consumers. This article explores the applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in addressing these challenges, focusing on food traceability, real-time monitoring, intelligent packaging, evaluation and safety alert systems, quality analysis, smart transportation, and food waste and energy management. Key findings reveal the effectiveness of IoT technologies in enhancing supply chain visibility, reducing food waste, and ensuring product quality. The article also highlights challenges hindering the widespread adoption of IoT, including poor IT infrastructure, lack of governing guidelines, low awareness, lack of trained staff, high investment costs, and security and privacy concerns. The scope of IoT in transforming the food supply chain is vast, with the potential to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance overall sustainability. The approach involves leveraging IoT-enabled devices, data analytics, and intelligent systems throughout the supply chain.
