The in-vitro anthelmintic activity of stem bark of Neolamarckia cadamba on goat intestinal round worms

Abstract

The present study investigates the in-vitro anthelmintic activity of methanolic extract of stem bark of Neolamarckia cadamba in goat intestinal round worms. Intestinal parasites are one of the major reason for decreased productivity, growth and efficacy in meat animals specially goats. The study was aimed to explore the potential of Neolamarckia cadamba extract as a natural remedy for intestinal round worm management in goats, comparing its efficacy to the standard anti-parasitic drug, Benzimidazole. Six groups of intestinal round worms were made with six worms in each group. Group T1 served as control and received normal saline. Group T2 served as standard and received the standard drug Benzimidazole @ 5 mg/ml. Groups T3, T4, T5 and T6 all received methanolic extract of stem bark of Neolamarckia cadamba @ 6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/ml. Time required for initiation of paralysis and death of worms was noted. Preliminary analysis indicates promising anthelmintic activity of methanolic extract of stem bark of Neolamarckia cadamba @ 50 mg/ml. The study observed a significant reduction in time required for mortality of all the worms, suggesting its potential as an adjunctive or alternative therapy for management of goat intestinal helminths.
