A case report: Management of gingival myiasis in a goat

Abstract

Myiasis is a pathological condition of the living tissues of animals caused by Dipteran larvae. Although gingival myiasis is a common health hazard for livestock, it is rarely reported. In farm animals, it is considered a threat to their welfare due to its intense pain and suffering. During the surveillance of research, an owner from the Natore district complained of a she-goat showing anorexia, a loose gum socket, and a swollen lower gum for several days. The described goat was a cross-breed, 1.5 years old, and weighed 20 kg. A clinical examination confirmed the case as gingival myiasis. This case report emphasizes the importance of prompt treatment in the successful management of gingival myiasis in goats. As a part of the treatment, larvae were instantly removed, and the wound area was dressed. Further, the case was handled by administering ivermectin, oxytetracycline, meloxicam, and calcium supplements. The goat was successfully cured in 6 days without any complications, underscoring the need for immediate action in such cases.
