Andrographis paniculata: qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis

Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry · 2018 · Vol. 7(4) · pp. 1251–1253

Abstract

Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Andrographis paniculata were screened for fourteen phytochemicals of which aqueous extract was found positive for alkaloids, phenols, tannins, phlobatannins, hydrolysable tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins. Ethanolic extract also showed similar results except that it was positive for cardiac glycosides and phlobatannins could not be detected. The quantity of tannins, terpenoids and saponins were more in aqueous extract whereas alkaloids, total phenols and flavonoids were more in ethanolic extract. Both the extracts exhibited antioxidant activity.
