In vitro antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of the methanolic extract of Alpinia purpurata root

Abstract

In the present study the methanolic extract of root of Alpinia purpurata was studied for alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibition using an in vitro model. The methanolic extract was also examined for its antioxidant activities by using free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging method. The study revealed that the different concentration of extracts exhibit potent radical scavenging activity using DPPH as substrate. The root of Alpinia purpurata exhibited significant α-amylase (66.10%) and α-glucosidase (78.70%) inhibitory activities at the concentration 100 µg/ml respectively and well compared with standard acarbose drug. Therefore, it is suggested that the methanolic extract of root of Alpinia purpurata is a potential source for natural antidiabetic and antioxidant compounds and could have potential use in the management of diabetes mellitus.
