Abstract
How will chemists contribute to the explosion in research at the micro and nano scale? In this Essay, an overview of the present and future possibilities for science and technology at these scales, and in particular how the chemistry community may play a leading role, is presented (the picture shows a mammalian cell labeled with fluorescent quantum dots).
