Surgical removal of neurofibroma in a budgerigar: A case report

Abstract

A six month old male budgerigar weighing around 30 gram was presented to department of veterinary surgery and radiology, veterinary clinical complex, river, puducherry with a history of having multiple growth on both wings for the past 1 month which was increasing in size and having difficult in flying. On clinical examination multiple growth was noticed on dorsal and ventral aspect of both wings attached cutaneously. All other vital parameters were within normal range. Under anaesthesia, inj.xylazine @ 2mg/kg b.wt and inj.ketamine @ 20mg/kg b.wt administered intramuscularly and the surgical site was aseptically prepared. Growth on the wings was excised and the skin layer was apposed using catgut size 3-0 in simple interrupted pattern. Excised mass was sent for histopathology which revealed a case of neurofibroma. Post-operatively, bird was medicated with cephalexin @ 40mg/kg b.wt b.i.d and meloxicam @ 0.2mg/kg b.wt per orally for seven day.
