Study of hemoglobinopathies using HPLC in pediatric patient at a tertiary care hospital

Abstract

Introduction: Abnormal haemoglobin variants or haemoglobinopathies are the most common genetically inherited disorders. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is gold standard for hemoglobinopathy diagnosis, provides excellent resolution, reproducibility, and quantification of normal and abnormal hemoglobin variants. Materials and Methods: Total 500 children were investigated for hemoglobinopathies using HPLC technique and pattern of different haematological parameters were studied at Department of Pathology, B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, over the period from March 2024 to December 2024. Results: Out of 500 children, 192 children (38.4%) were detected with different hemoglobinopathies with majority of children having beta thalassemia minor followed by sickle cell trait and Hb D Punjab trait. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of HPLC in diagnosing hemoglobinopathies in pediatric patients and supports HPLC implementation for pediatric hemoglobinopathy screening, enabling early diagnosis and appropriate management at a tertiary care center.
