Pterygium excision with conjunctival modified sutureless glueless limbal conjunctival autograft and Mitomycin-C: A prospective clinical study

Abstract

Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure and chronic inflammation. Surgical excision remains the definitive treatment; however, recurrence continues to be a major concern. Aim: To evaluate the clinical outcomes and recurrence rate following pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft combined with intraoperative Mitomycin-C (MMC). Materials and Methods: This prospective interventional study included 18 eyes of 18 patients diagnosed with primary pterygium. All patients underwent pterygium excision followed by conjunctival autografting with intraoperative application of MMC (0.02%). Patients were followed for 1 week and 2 months postoperatively. Outcome measures included recurrence rate, postoperative complications, astigmatic changes, and visual acuity. Results: The mean age of patients was 57.0±13 years (range 23–72 years) with male predominance (72%). Nasal pterygium was the most common presentation.No recurrence was observed during the follow-up period. Early postoperative complications were mild and self-limiting. A statistically significant reduction in pterygium-induced astigmatism was noted (p< 0.05). Conclusion: Pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft and intraoperative MMC is a safe and effective technique with low recurrence and favorable visual outcomes.
