Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the clinico-physiological effects of dexmedetomidine and tramadol as premedicants to zolazepam-tiletamine anaesthesia in dogs. Eighteen clinical cases were randomly divided into three groups: dexmedetomidine (Group I), tramadol (Group II) and their combination (Group III), following glycopyrrolate premedication. Anaesthesia was induced intravenously with zolazepam-tiletamine, and physiological parameters were monitored at fixed intervals. Dexmedetomidine-based protocols produced superior sedation, analgesia and muscle relaxation with reduced heart and respiration rates while maintaining SpO₂ and blood pressure within normal limits. Tramadol provided additional analgesia without significant cardiopulmonary depression. Overall, both drugs, alone or combined, were found to be safe and effective premedicants for canine anaesthesia.
