A study to assess the knowledge regarding common child health problems and their home management among parents residing in selected urban areas of Jaipur city, Rajasthan

Abstract

Children’s health is a fundamental determinant of a nation’s future, and parents play a vital role in ensuring proper growth, development, and well-being of their children. Common childhood health problems such as respiratory infections, febrile illnesses, diarrhoea, malnutrition, and minor injuries can often be effectively managed at home when parents possess adequate knowledge. However, lack of awareness and improper home management practices may lead to complications, increased hospitalization, and preventable child morbidity and mortality. Hence, assessing parental knowledge regarding common child health problems and their home management is essential. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge regarding common child health problems and their home management among parents residing in selected urban areas of Jaipur City, Rajasthan, and to determine the association between knowledge level and selected socio-demographic variables. A quantitative research approach with a descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The sample comprised 50 parents selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire consisting of demographic variables and questions related to common child health problems and their home management. The tool was validated by experts and demonstrated high reliability (r = 0.85). The findings revealed that the majority of parents (68%) had an average level of knowledge, 14% had good knowledge, and 18% had poor knowledge regarding common child health problems and their home management. Area-wise analysis showed moderate knowledge in general child health, common child health problems, and injury, safety, and hygiene, while lower knowledge was observed in respiratory and febrile illnesses. Statistical analysis showed a significant association between level of knowledge and social category, whereas no significant association was found with other selected socio-demographic variables. The study concludes that although parents possess moderate knowledge, there is a need for planned health education programs to improve parental knowledge, particularly regarding respiratory and febrile illnesses, to promote effective home management and better child health outcomes.
