Association between forearm circumference and onset of muscle fatigue in young adults using Mosso’s ergograph: An ancillary study
Abstract
Background: The physiological process of muscle fatigue results from various intrinsic and extrinsic elements and anthropometric parameters. The size of forearm muscles affects both strength potential and the onset of muscle fatigue during repeated muscle contractions. This ancillary study aims to explore the relationship between forearm circumference and the onset of muscle fatigue in young adults using Mosso’s ergograph as the assessment tool. Objectives: To study the association between forearm circumference and the onset of muscle fatigue in young adults using Mosso’s ergograph. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the department of Munafeul-ul-Aza, AKTC, AMU, Aligarh, on one hundred twenty (120) healthy young adults, randomly selected, both male and female students, between the age group of 20 to 25 years. Forearm circumference was measured using standardized anthropometric techniques. The onset of Fatigue was calculated by Mosso's Ergography. The data were analyzed to evaluate correlations between forearm circumference and fatigue onset. Results: The study found a statistically significant moderate positive relationship between forearm circumference and the onset of muscle fatigue. Conclusion: Based on the statistical analysis, the correlation between forearm circumference and the onset of muscle fatigue was found to be statistically significant, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r=0.324 (p=0.0003) and a Spearman rank correlation coefficient of rs=0.368 (p<0.0001). The alternative hypothesis (H1), which posits a significant association, is accepted.
