MSP Debate and Farmer Policy Reforms in India

Abstract

Minimum Support Price (MSP) is one of the most significant agricultural policy instruments implemented by the Government of India to ensure income security and economic stability for farmers. MSP refers to the guaranteed price at which the government procures agricultural produce from farmers, irrespective of market price fluctuations. The policy primarily aims to protect farmers from distress sales, stabilize agricultural markets, and encourage the cultivation of essential food crops. challenges such as limited crop coverage, regional disparities in procurement, lack of awareness, and environmental concerns related to monocropping affect the overall effectiveness of MSP. Strengthening procurement mechanisms, expanding MSP benefits to diversified crops, and improving market infrastructure can enhance its impact on sustainable farmer welfare.
