Millets and Their Role in Nutritional Security in India

Abstract

Millets are small-seeded cereal crops that have played a significant role in traditional Indian agriculture and food systems for centuries. In recent years, millets have regained importance due to their high nutritional value, climate resilience, and potential contribution to sustainable agriculture. India is one of the largest producers and consumers of millets, cultivating major varieties such as Pearl Millet, Finger Millet, Sorghum, and several minor millets under diverse agro-climatic conditions. These crops are rich in dietary fiber, essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, making them effective in combating malnutrition, lifestyle diseases, and micronutrient deficiencies. Millets require low water input, possess strong tolerance to drought and poor soil conditions, and support ecological sustainability, particularly in rainfed and marginal farming areas. Government initiatives such as the declaration of the International Year of Millets 2023 have further promoted millet production, consumption, and value addition in India. The integration of millets into national food security programs, public distribution systems, and nutritional schemes highlights their growing role in ensuring food and nutritional security. Thus, millets offer a sustainable pathway toward climate-resilient agriculture, improved farmer livelihoods, and healthier dietary patterns in India.
