Role of self-help groups in promoting women entrepreneurship in Ernakulam district
Abstract
Women entrepreneurship plays a significant role in promoting inclusive economic development and social empowerment, particularly in developing regions like India. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as an effective grassroots mechanism for enabling women to overcome financial, social, and institutional barriers to entrepreneurship. This study examines the role of SHGs in promoting women entrepreneurship in Ernakulam district of Kerala, with special reference to SHG members engaged in income-generating activities. The study analyses the impact of SHG participation on women’s income levels, decision-making power, and social status. It also evaluates the support provided by government schemes, non-governmental organizations, and microfinance institutions in strengthening SHG-based enterprises. Primary data were collected from 320 women SHG members through a structured questionnaire using convenience sampling, supported by secondary data from reports, journals, and websites. The study further explores the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, including lack of training, limited market access, financial constraints, and digital skill gaps. The findings highlight that SHGs significantly contribute to women’s economic independence, confidence, and entrepreneurial capabilities, though sustained support and capacity-building are required for long-term growth. The study provides useful insights for policymakers and development agencies to enhance SHG effectiveness and promote sustainable women-led enterprises.
