Growth performance of wheat in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh: A CAGR-based analysis (2001–2020)

Abstract

Wheat is one of the major rabi crops contributing to food security in Chhattisgarh. The present study examines the growth performance of wheat in Jashpur district over a twenty-year period (2001–2020) using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) analysis. The study evaluates trends in area, production, and productivity by dividing the period into Period I (2001–2010) and Period II (2011–2020), along with overall analysis. The results reveal a continuous decline in area under wheat cultivation across all periods, with an overall CAGR of –2.78 percent. Production recorded marginal growth during Period I (0.24 percent) but declined sharply during Period II (–3.45 percent). Productivity showed improvement during the first phase (2.11 percent) but declined in the second phase (–3.48 percent), although the overall productivity growth remained positive (1.20 percent). The findings indicate structural changes in wheat cultivation, possibly due to crop diversification, climatic variability, and shifting farmer preferences. The study suggests the need for technological interventions, irrigation support, and policy focus to sustain wheat production in the district.
