To estimate the compound growth rate of area and production of papaya in Durg district of Chhattisgarh
Abstract
Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a commercially important fruit crop contributing to horticultural growth and farm income in India. This study examines the growth performance of papaya in Durg district and Chhattisgarh state during 2011-12 to 2020-21 using the compound growth rate (CGR) model based on time-series secondary data. The results indicate that in Durg district, area and production increased significantly at 4.84 per cent and 4.56 per cent per annum, respectively. However, productivity recorded a marginal but significant negative growth rate of -0.26 per cent, suggesting that production growth was mainly driven by area expansion rather than yield improvement. At the state level, Chhattisgarh showed significant positive growth in area (3.21%) and production (4.44%), along with a modest positive growth in productivity (1.19%). The study concludes that while papaya cultivation is expanding steadily in the region, sustainable growth will depend on improving productivity through better crop management, technological adoption, and strengthened extension support.
