Histomorphological studies of intestine in normal and Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermented product fed broiler

Abstract

The current study is focused on the morphological differences in the intestinal segments of broiler chickens fed with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and normal diet. Six birds from each group were slaughtered on the 21st and 42nd day of age and tissue samples from the duodenum jejunum, ileum, and caecum were collected. The small intestine of both the groups was found to have three layers: the tunica mucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa, from inner to outer. The submucosa was inappreciable. The tunica mucosa presented different villi that varied in its shape, size and appearance. The tunica muscularis had 3 distinct layers the inner and outer longitudinal and middle circular layers. The tunica mucosa had numerous blood vessels and adipose tissue. Feeding of Saccharomyces cerevisiae had showed beneficial impact on the broilers performance in terms of carcass weight. This may be due to alteration in bird’s metabolism which is due to the structural differences that occurred due to feeding of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It increased the height and density of villus which is responsible for better rate of nutrient absorption. It also showed increase in thickness of tunica muscularis, goblet size, and diameter of lymphatic nodule that helped in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microbes.
