Therapeutic management of hydro-peritoneum associated with Ancylostoma caninum in mix breed dog: A case report

Abstract

A one-year-old mix breed female dog was presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, DUVASU, Mathura with the history of anorexia, weakness, loose tarry feces, abnormal urination, exercise intolerance, dyspnea, an incomplete deworming schedule and bilateral abdominal enlargement. Abdominal percussion revealed presence of fluid thrill in peritoneal cavity. Detailed clinical examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnea, pyrexia, increased capillary refill time (>2sec) along with pale mucous membrane and emaciation. Fecal sample, whole blood and ascitic fluid were collected and analyzed in the laboratory which revealed anemia, leukocytosis, hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. Radiographic examination of lateral thorax showednormal heart contour. Fecal examination revealed eggs of Ancylostoma caninum. Based on the history, clinical signs, radiographic findings and fecal examination findings and laboratory parameters, the case was diagnosed as ancylostomosis induced hydro-peritoneum. Therapeutic management was initiated with fluid therapy (5% Dextrose@50ml/kg b.wt. and Hydroxyethyl Starch@5ml/kg b.wt. for first three day), broad spectrum antibiotics (Ceftriaxone Tazobactum @ 25 mg/kg b.wt. for five days), and anthelmintic drug containing Pyrental Pamoate (Nemocid @ 5mg/kg b.wt. oral for three consecutive days), multivitamins (Eldervet@1ml/20 kg b.wt. for five days), diuretic (Furosemide@4 mg/kg b.wt.), oral hematinics (aRBCe Pet Syrup@1ml/4kg b.wt. for 15 days) along with routine abdominocentesis for first three days. Owner was advised to offer high protein diet like Paneer, egg white albumin and meat. The animal started improving oneweek after treatment and recovered fully after three weeks of treatment with negative fecal smear examination.
