Incidence and Distribution of Peanut Bud Necrosis Disease of Groundnut in Northeastern Karnataka

Abstract

Peanut Bud Necrosis Disease (PBND), caused by Peanut Bud Necrosis Virus (PBNV) is a significant constraint in groundnut production in India. A roving survey was conducted during kharif 2022 and rabi/summer 2022-23 across five major groundnut growing districts of Northeastern Karnataka viz., Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Vijayanagara and Chitradurga to assess the incidence of PBND. A total of 30 villages were surveyed and the disease incidence was assessed based on characteristic field symptoms. Results revealed a mean PBND incidence ranging from 18.06 to 36.50 per cent. The highest incidence was observed in Chandrabanda village of Raichur district, while the lowest was recorded in Talwargera village of Yadgir district. Raichur recorded the highest mean district level incidence (29.03%), followed by Koppal (24.18%) and Chitradurga (23.99%). The disease was more prevalent during the late Kharif season than in rabi/summer, likely due to favorable environmental conditions for vector activity. The study highlights the widespread prevalence of PBND and underscores the urgent need for location specific, season tailored management strategies to contain the disease.
