Rapid recovery of udder injury in a cow following an ox horn attack: A veterinary homoeopathic case report

Abstract

Background: Udder injuries in dairy cattle frequently result from horn-inflicted trauma during aggressive interactions and this can lead to mastitis, reduced milk yield, and long term glandular damage. Conventional management generally includes wound suturing, antiseptic care, and systemic medications. This case report details the management of a horn-inflicted udder laceration in a cow using homoeopathic treatment instead of surgical or allopathic interventions. Case presentation: A lactating Bos taurus cow sustained a deep puncture wound to the udder following an ox horn injury. Clinical findings included swelling, pain on palpation, reduced milk let-down, and avoidance behaviour. No vascular compromise or systemic infection was observed. Intervention: The treatment protocol included Arnica montana 200C, Bellis perennis 200C, Hypericum perforatum 200C administered orally, and Calendula officinalis Q used both orally and topically for wound cleansing and dressing. Outcome: Noticeable reduction in pain and swelling was observed within 8 hours. Progressive wound contraction occurred without suturing or antibiotic therapy, and near-complete healing was achieved within 7 days, casuality assessment using the Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) yielded a score of 10, indicating a probable association between the intervention and clinical outcome. Conclusion: This single case suggests that individualized homoeopathic management may serve as supportive therapy in uncomplicated bovine udder trauma. Controlled studies are required to confirm reproducibility and comparative effectiveness.
