Comparative evaluation of gallic acid combined with sodium fluoride versus gallic acid combined with bioglass nanoparticles for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity: An in-vitro study

International Journal of Applied Dental Sciences · 2026 · Vol. 12(3) · pp. 09–13

Abstract

Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) results from exposed dentinal tubules transmitting external stimuli to pulpal nerves. Conventional desensitizing agents like sodium fluoride (NaF) occlude tubules but show limited durability. Bioglass nanoparticles and natural antioxidants such as gallic acid have emerged as promising bioactive alternatives for tubular occlusion and remineralization. Aim: To comparatively evaluate the efficacy of gallic acid combined with sodium fluoride versus gallic acid combined with bioglass nanoparticles in reducing dentinal permeability in vitro. Materials and Methods: Thirty dentin discs prepared from extracted human molars were etched with 6% citric acid to expose tubules and randomly divided into three groups (n = 10): Group I - gallic acid + bioglass nanoparticles, Group II - gallic acid + sodium fluoride, and Group III - untreated control. Each specimen received topical application of the respective solution and was stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours at 37°C. Hydraulic conductance (Lp) was measured using a fluid filtration apparatus. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test with p
