Remote sensing based vegetable pea crop acreage estimation of a district of Central India

Abstract

The worldwide food supply system has been impacted by increasing population pressure and the detrimental effects of climate change, making timely and precise estimations of crop areas necessary for agricultural management and ensuring national food security. In many nations, crop area estimation is based on conventional data gathering methods, such as field visits and reports from the actual field. Their estimates of crop acreage are prone to substantial errors because of a lack of ground observations. Thus, the assessment of crop planting areas during the crop growth period using remote sensing data has become increasingly popular. This study attempts to estimate the crop acreage of Vegetable Peas for the Jabalpur district of Central India (Madhya Pradesh) using Remote sensing and GIS techniques. For the state and district, Vegetable Pea is an important vegetable commodity. This study estimates crop acreage using Sentinel-2 Satellite data of 2016 and 2022. Government data is also used to validate crop area estimates derived from remote sensing and GIS.
