Evaluation of protein and mineral status in cattle with traumatic reticuloperitonitis
Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate alterations in key serum biochemical parameters in TRP-affected cattle and assess their diagnostic significance. Eighteen animals were included, comprising clinically confirmed TRP cases and healthy controls, with diagnosis supported by characteristic, clinical signs and radiographic examination. Serum samples were analyzed for total protein, albumin, globulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), calcium, and phosphorus. TRP-affected cattle exhibited clear biochemical abnormalities indicative of systemic inflammation and metabolic imbalance. CRP, total protein, and globulin levels were markedly elevated in affected animals, reflecting intense inflammatory stimulation and chronic disease progression. In contrast, serum albumin was significantly decreased, consistent with a negative acute-phase response and reduced hepatic albumin synthesis. Mineral assessment revealed distinct disturbances, with TRP-affected cattle showing pronounced hypocalcemia, likely due to anorexia, reduced gastrointestinal absorption, and metabolic shifts associated with prolonged inflammation. Phosphorus concentrations were notably increased, suggesting compensatory mobilization from tissue reserves in response to calcium depletion.
