Surgical management of polycystic kidney disease by unilateral nephrectomy: A case report

Abstract

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a hereditary disorder characterized by progressive cystic degeneration of renal tissue; most observed in its autosomal dominant form in companion animals. This case report details the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and surgical management of a 7-month-old cryptorchid Golden Retriever exhibiting anorexia and turbid urine. Diagnostic imaging confirmed the presence of multiple renal cysts as a space-occupying abdominal mass. A left unilateral nephrectomy was performed, along with cryptorchidectomy and routine castration. Surgical intervention included careful dissection and ligation of renal vessels and ureter, with postoperative management involving antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory therapy. The patient demonstrated progressive clinical improvement, with resolution of urinary abnormalities and normal renal function confirmed by biochemical parameters by postoperative day 10. This case supports unilateral nephrectomy as a viable and effective surgical approach for managing localized PKD in dogs, with favourable outcomes when combined with appropriate postoperative care and follow-up.
