Qualitative Phytochemical Analysis of Dried Moringa oleifera Stem Extracts and Their Biological Significance
Abstract
Moringa oleifera is a nutritionally rich multipurpose plant known for the presence of various bioactive phytochemicals with potential biological and therapeutic properties. While the leaf fraction of Moringa oleifera has been widely explored in livestock nutrition, limited information is available regarding the phytochemical composition of its stem fraction. The present study was therefore undertaken to qualitatively evaluate the phytochemical constituents present in dried Moringa oleifera stem extracts and to assess their potential biological significance. Fresh thin stems were collected from Sudhakar Singh Farms, Dhamdha, Durg (Chhattisgarh) and shade dried prior to grinding into fine powder. Aqueous, aqueous methanolic and acetone extracts were prepared and subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening using standard procedures for detection of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and glycosides. The results revealed the presence of flavonoids in all three solvent extracts, whereas tannins and saponins were detected in aqueous and aqueous methanolic extracts. Alkaloids were identified in aqueous and acetone extracts, while glycosides were detected only in the aqueous extract. Variation in phytochemical distribution among extracts was attributed to differences in solvent polarity. The presence of these secondary metabolites indicates the potential biological relevance of dried Moringa oleifera stem as a functional phytogenic resource. The findings suggest that stem-derived phytochemicals may serve as promising natural feed additives in livestock nutrition; however, further quantitative and in vivo investigations are required to validate their practical applicability.
