Comparative study of growth performance of pigs reared between traditional and Bokashi methods of rearing system

Abstract

Bokashi Piggery method is the use of fermented organic matter which consists of Indigenous Micro Organism (IMOs) to promote growth and development of pigs. Probiotic preparation based on effective micro-organisms are increasingly used in pig feedings. One of such effective microorganism-based preparations used in pigs is Bokashi farming method. In the present study, Indigenous Micro Organisms (IMOs) which are naturally available good source of probiotics are added to the bedding materials of pigs which is ingested by pigs either through the natural rooting behavior of pigs or along with the spilled feed on the bedding materials. A comparative study was conducted on crossbred pigs reared on Traditional method and Bokashi method from weaning day (56 days) till marketable age (8 months). Twenty crossbred pigs of same age group and same average body weight were randomly divided into two groups; pigs in T1 group were reared at traditional shed while pigs in T2 group were reared on Bokashi shed. They were offered same quantity and quality of feed and ad libitum water. During the period of study (6 months) monthly body weight gain and FCR were recorded. The results of the study revealed that there existed a highly significant (p˂0.01) differences in the body weight gain and FCR of pigs in the last two months of study period.
