Study on socio-economic profile, rearing and management practices of indigenous Kakkera chicken in Yadgir district of Karnataka

Abstract

The present study evaluated the socio-economic profile, rearing and management practices of Indigenous Kakkera chicken and their rearing farmers in Yadgir district of Karnataka. A total of 260 households from Surapura (148) and Hunasagi (112) taluks were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Most farmers belonged to the middle-aged group (52%), had primary education (62%), and practiced agriculture as the main occupation, with poultry as a subsidiary source of income. The average flock size was 22.46±0.21 birds, dominated by adult females. Birds were reared under scavenging systems with temporary housing, and 96.32% of farmers supplemented feed mainly with bajra and kitchen waste. Marketing was largely confined to the sale of male birds for meat. The study highlights the importance of Kakkera chicken rearing in supporting rural livelihoods and emphasizes the need for its sustainable utilization and conservation.
