An analysis of self-help group in Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand

Abstract

Self-help groups are an initiative of the central government for women who belong to the same background and are willing to improve their lifestyle. This study undertaken so far has assessed the status of SHGs in Udham Singh Nagar District in Uttarakhand, focusing on the working procedure of SHGs and the involvement of NRLM in the development of SHGs. This study tried to highlight the growth of women after joining the group and the perception of SHG women towards the working process of the National Rural Livelihood Mission in favour of SHGs. The study focuses on ten SHGs from two blocks, Gadarpur and Khatima. These blocks belong to Udham Singh Nagar. Each SHG has 10 members. Thus, the study group included 100 members. The result of the study revealed that women had a positive attitude toward SHGs. Lifestyle of women also changed after joining the SHG. Women can now provide a good education to children, and women's decision-making capacity is also enhanced. Presently, women of SHGs have a good position in the family because of their financial independence.
