Abstract

A study was conducted to characterize local pigs of northern hilly region of Chhattisgarh. The Northern hilly region of Chhattisgarh is largely inhabited by tribal communities whose livelihoods depend on pig farming as a source of income and nutritional security, particularly among smallholder. Data collection from the selected pig population and characterization was carried out in three districts of northern hilly region of Chhattisgarh: Surguja, Surajpur and Korea. Local pigs of the Northern Hilly region of Chhattisgarh were slaughtered at 17.45±0.28 (male) and 16.00±0.42 (female) months, mainly during socio-economic events. Mean live weight was 30.25±0.31 kg (male) and 28.15±0.52 kg (female), with corresponding carcass traits in males were 21.32±0.23 kg carcass weight, 55.95±0.03 cm carcass length, 70.47±0.11% dressing percentage, and 2.67±0.03 meat-to-bone ratio, while females recorded 19.67±0.35 kg, 53.90±0.09 cm, 69.88±0.26%, and 2.66±0.02, respectively. The average age at sexual maturity in male pig was found to be 7.58±0.12 months and had 10.823 number of teats. The study revealed that age at first estrus was 6.84±0.27 months with an estrus duration of 21.75±0.53 hours. Age at first mating, first farrowing, and farrowing interval were 8.20±0.06, 12.47±0.96, and 6.02±0.09 months, respectively. Litter size and litter weight at birth were 6.18±0.24 and 3.80±0.24 kg, while lifetime farrowing, productive lifespan, and number of teats were 11.75±0.75, 11.46 years, and 11.58, respectively.
