Advances in minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for gynecological surgery
Abstract
Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery has substantially transformed gynecological practice by offering reduced surgical trauma, shorter recovery periods, and improved cosmetic outcomes compared to traditional open approaches. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety profile, and perioperative outcomes of advanced laparoscopic techniques in gynecological surgery through a prospective comparative analysis. A total of 480 patients undergoing gynecological procedures at a tertiary care center between January 2021 and December 2023 were enrolled, with 240 patients in the laparoscopic group and 240 in the open surgery group. Outcome measures included operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative pain scores, hospital stay duration, complication rates, and patient satisfaction. Statistical analysis using independent t-tests, chi-square tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests revealed that the laparoscopic group demonstrated significantly shorter mean hospital stays (1.8 vs. 4.5 days, p<0.001), lower mean intraoperative blood loss (95.2 vs. 245.8 mL, p<0.001), reduced postoperative pain scores across all seven postoperative days (p<0.001), and lower overall complication rates (6.7% vs. 14.2%, p=0.006). Laparoscopic hysterectomy constituted the most frequently performed procedure (34.2%). These findings confirm that advanced laparoscopic techniques offer statistically significant and clinically meaningful advantages over conventional open surgery for a range of gynecological conditions, supporting their expanded adoption in contemporary surgical practice.
